The recent launch of two services -- a brand new, fully three-dimensional chat-room product known as IMVU, and AOL Instant Messenger's new 3-D SuperBuddy icons -- is putting the spotlight on a major shift by the leading IM providers toward making graphical avatars a fundamental personalization feature.
IMVU is the new service from Will Harvey, founder of There. Harvey is riffing on some of the core communications features he developed for There's metaverse and devoting them to instant messaging. In IMVU , people talk to each other in 3-D chat rooms using avatars that display a wide range of emotional cues and do so through a client that is compatible with the leading IM applications.
"IMVU gives you the sense that you are in the presence of the person you are chatting with," said Harvey. "What I think we understand better than anyone else is that the killer app is something that lets people feel like they are with the person they are chatting with."
People seem to see something in IMVU -- Harvey said the service is getting 1,000 new users per day.
AIM's 3-D SuperBuddy icons appear alongside the service's traditional chat boxes and display emotional cues in response to commands typed by the service's users. AOL subscribers have used SuperBuddies since mid-2003, but their release in AIM follows a trend of graphical avatar-based instant messaging started by Yahoo and ICQ.
"It's really an extension to the conversation," said Drew Weaver, AOL's director of marketing for expressions and greetings. "It really adds a layer of fun and interactivity to the conversation without getting in the way of the actual conversation itself."
According to a study by comScore MediaMetrix, more than 250 million people use instant messaging regularly. And IDC estimates that more than 7 billion instant messages are sent every day. According to AOL senior director of corporate communications Krista Thomas, AIM's users are known to spend six hours a day on average with their IM client open.
And now, each company hopes, adding avatars to the mix will only increase the amount of time and commitment users have to instant messaging.
Some, however, aren't so sure they're on the right track.
"Avatar-based IM is a curiosity right now," said Jeff Hester, who runs the instant-messaging watchdog site, BigBlueBall.com. "It's cute, but I don't think many people have embraced it as something they couldn't live without. It feels a little like a solution in search of a problem."
Part of the problem is that the avatars that have been available for a while have been limited as to what kind of information they can convey, Hester acknowledged. The new releases may hold more promise.
"As the ability to express emotions becomes more fluid with avatar-based systems, that could change," he said. "Right now emotions are the most difficult thing to convey. Many times people get mixed messages, or misinterpret what someone says because there is no body language to go with it."
Genelle Hung, a market analyst at the Radicati Group, said that while she sees some benefits to avatar-based IM, she's not sure it is going to be the big hit the IM services want it to be.
"I think it's kind of short-lived," Hung said. "I think it's one of those faddish things that people are going to want to have for a while." Instead, she said, services like IMVU are likely to appeal to niche audiences rather than the widespread mass market that Harvey is hoping for.

IMVU is related to There only insofar as I founded There.com and I also founded IMVU. IMVU is a new thing, with a different vision. When I started There, I thought that one company could become the Microsoft in a sense, or the predominant OS, for the whole metaverse and virtual world.

I created There.com to be that company, so we built extraordinary technology to support a massively scalable world with 100's of thousands of users in a physically simulated virtual world -- a platform or OS for virtual reality. IMVU is a different vision.

I no longer believe that a single company will own the metaverse or the OS on which the metaverse is built. The internet is just fundamentally different from an OS for desktop applications. The internet advances through the combined efforts of a plurality of companies, each of which provides one part of the overall picture.

Nevertheless, it is also true that few companies succeed in complete isolation. So as you can see, cooperation happens, even if it isn't premeditated or planned. Companies need to be open to that philosophy to succeed.
I'm not really aware of many strategic partnerships in this space, can you give me an example? Or, if you prefer, are there any IMVU partnerships you care to discuss?
LOL, I can't think of a non-example. Where would Intel be without Microsoft or vice versa? Where would yahoo be without Netstape or IE?

Ah, the virtual world is not as mature as other areas. Companies need to carve out some success on their own first. There, SL, IMVU are all doing that now. But in the long run the success of all these companies will be related to how they fit into the ecosystem of applications and services that the users use, everything from IM to social networking, email, web browsing, etc. In the fullness of time, 3D avatars and 3D worlds will touch upon a lot of things that people do online.
Do you see IMVU moving more or less towards competition with other virtual worlds?

I love virtual worlds, and I think they are extraordinarily interesting from almost every angle of engineering and computer science, not to mention other areas of academics. But no, I wouldn't want to try to reproduce what There and SL have built. Of course, you could define "virtual world" to encompass the kind of things that IMVU does, but I don't think such a definition captures what most people mean and think of.
I would say one of IMVU's chief strengths is its compactness as opposed to what SL and There are up to.
Yes, the compactness of IMVU is definitely one of its strengths. Sometimes less is more. In some ways, that is the case here. People can use IMVU without having to commit to a video game like experience in time, focus, and screen area.
Could we talk a bit more about the potential for interoperability with other software applications? I notice, for example, that IMVU is built on some Open Source software... Can you talk a bit about the rationale for the Open Source tools?

IMVU could approach the big P in 2 ways
1) Let people visit and leave messages and objects for their buddies in their private rooms even when the buddy is away. Like email, this would allow delayed, ongoing communication not limited by the need to be immediately present.
2) Allow each user to own a multi-person persistent chat room that holds 6-7 people in addition to the private individual buddy rooms. Let them control the settings for making the room open to all, open just to buddies, closed to all, etc. along with the related but separate option of whether their room remains open while they are not occupying it.
If you could add features like this then imo IMVU would not only be a virtual world application but would be a fascinating new category of virtual worlds that emphasizes one-to-one and small group relationships over the one large world concept. Instead of being dumped into one large world to explore and then move to private, smaller groups with the friends you make, you're starting out with all the buddies you already know and bringing them into a small, distributed, private virtual world spaces. It's an interesting reversal. It's also something that would more likely be centered from a social perspective on RL relationships since buddy lists are primarily made up of people you already know in RL.
BTW, you have likely seen this already but the new Pew Report on Instant Messaging released yesterday has some interesting data about IM usage. This seems to bode particularly well:
"Instant messengers utilize IM not only as a way to expand and remain connected their social circle, but also as a form of self-expression, through use of customized away messages, profiles and buddy icons."

Due to concerns expressed by their payment processors, IMVU recently changed its Terms of Service to disallow "Adult" content in IMVU, terming it "Unfit for IMVU" or UFI. "Restricted" content was consequently limited to content similar to that allowed in an R-rated movie. As "Adult" content had been previously submitted, sold, and purchased, IMVU had to remove the newly UFI items from users' inventories. IMVU additionally refunded users the credits spent on such items. Many AP purchasers continued to be irate as they believed that such content was and would continue to be allowable, since to purchase and use an AP one was required to self-certify they were 18 and have a valid credit card.
Many customers now complain that the "Restricted" content available is more of a PG-13-rated nature rather than of an R-rated level. Additionally, the updated Terms of Service now explicitly allows IMVU to remove content from customer's inventories without compensation, though the previous Term of Service allowed this, though it was not detailed in an explicit manner. In addition, some animations produced by IMVU, which were originally bundled with the AP, have been rated by IMVU as UFI and subsequently removed; this, in turn, has lead members to make a point that even IMVU management has itself been confused over what is and what is not "fit" for IMVU.
Age Verification
Subsequently, IMVU implemented a stronger form of age verification, through a third-party identity verification process. IMVU has named this product Age Verification Token. IMVU has not disclosed to its members the third-party company providing the verification process. Some IMVU members feel they have a right to know the identity of the firm to whom they're providing their personally identifying information, such as social security, drivers license, passport and home address information.
Age Verification is voluntary, and requires a fee. Age Verification is free with the purchase of the Access Pass, but is not needed to buy or use the Access Pass, or Access Pass Content.
Business Record With Customers and Vendors
IMVU has an "unsatisfactory" rating from the Better Business Bureau.
